Energizing today’s students through knowledge to create tomorrow’s citizens.

The League of Women Voters of Washington Education Fund works on major civics education projects to teach students how they can participate in making and keeping government effective. The League’s learning materials, which include two versions of the textbook The State We’re In: Washington, build a foundation for understanding our government and how to be actively involved participants. Due to their popularity and high demand, we produce periodic updates and new Teacher’s Guides.

  • Unique

Both of these books are professionally written and illustrated with graphs, photos and drawings, and cover the basic ideas and structures of our democratic government. They include sidebars about people and historical events, and reflect our state’s ethnic and geographic diversity. These are the first civics texts to include current and historic tribal governments. Chapters about sustainability and civics and the natural world are also included.

  • User-Friendly

Students and teachers can move smoothly and easily through the materials while learning that civics and Washington state history lessons are interesting and fun. The materials are also useful for home schools and community college classrooms, GED, ESL and the Youth and Government programs. Adults can also find a wealth of useful information in the books. They are a unique resource for immigrants and new residents of all ages.

  • Endorsed

Developed in consultation with the OSPI’s Office of Native Education and Office of Social Studies, the Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs, the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, and many experienced teachers and students. The books are endorsed by the Washington State Council for the Social Studies and the Washington State Indian Education Association, and the Since Time Immemorial: Tribal Sovereignty in Washington State curriculum refers teachers to using these books.
